Booklet...

I have put my essay into a booklet using InDesign.
For the front cover I have just used an image still from Double Indemnity on plain black with my name and the title written in the font Bebas again. I have written the text in 2 columns per page (4 per A4) with the bibliography on the inside of the back cover. Its very clean and simple and only has one image within the text. It fits well with my other work. This was very hard to work out what goes where in terms of printing it. I made a template that didn't work! Printed lots of practices and even took it to the printers wrong! Finally I have it right!

Leaflet...

I want to create a trifold leaflet. I explored this in my sketchbook. I am going to have a timeline in the middle. A simple front cover and a quote on the middle section with a plain black back.
My theme is film noir, which is obviously from the 40's/50's, in my sketchbook I explored different ways of looking at this (Doing poster art or basing it more on the cinematography) I am basing it more on the stills and the darkness of noir, I am putting a sort of modern twist in with it, especially for the leaflet. I want it quite minimal, with the font still flowing from piece to piece (bebas) I am using mainly black and white with a swatch of a sort of beige/pink which works really well with the black and white, I will use this colour when needed throughout the whole project.
To start with I wanted to draw a gun, I have done this in Illustrator using the pen tool and sometimes the eclipse and rectangle tool also. I have drawn a modern looking line drawing of a gun rather than an old fashioned film noir gun, I have done this to fit in my modern style of Film Noir.
I am calling the leaflet - A brief History of film noir - I have put this in Bebas as if it coming out of the gun..
I then added the main 'FILM NOIR' and the background colour (the pink/beige I was talking about earlier - I saved this as a swatch so I can use it amongst all my designs...
I am please with the front colour, it is a very bold and simple, I think it works well within my theme.
I made a timeline which opens up to A4 size. I did this in illustrator using the line tool, I have drawn the line alternating longer and shorter, its very sharp and again works well in my theme. The text of the films I have put in bebas to sot well with all the other designs.

For the middle folding page I have added a quote from a famous film noir film. I went through many quotes and this stands out the most to sit within this design.

I had a lot of trouble figuring out where to put what side! I printed many practices before I went to the printers!

Postcards

Originally I thought I would be using famous film stills from Film Noir's but because I took so many of my own photos I may as well use some of those too with one still from Double Indemnity.
I put 4 of the images on an A4 spread in Illustrator which I will print and cut to size and did simple lines on the back like a regular postcard has...

Poster

For my poster I am going to use one of the doorway images. I will turn this into black and white and play around with contrast and light....

I opened the image in Photoshop...
The image alone wasn't big enough for an A3 poster, so I made a new layer and copied and pasted the image into that. I chose to layer them up where the door was as it would be easy to blend.
I then blended the images together using a layer mask. The door doesn't look like it has been put together at all which is great.

I then turned the image to black and white I did this by pulling the colour away from the image..
I then played around with colour balance and saturation etc...
I then wanted to darken parts of the image to get that intense black seen in Film Noir. I did this by using the pen tool to select where I wanted to darken...
I then changed the contrast to darken certain areas without making the whole image dark (Which just made the woman look funny)
I then played around with different font faces until I came across Bebas which worked really well as the title. Then a script font called Lauren Script (which is weird as that is the models name!) for the actors.. I put this across the plain door, its very simple but effective.

The Shoot...

Here are some shots from my photoshoot... I took a range from looking through banisters to looking around door frames and some shots from above looking down. I am really pleased with how they have turned out and think they will look great once they have been edited...

The image below is of the model before hair and makeup...
Here are some of the door images...
Here are some through banisters, I really like the shadows they create...

The images below work really well, I think I will use one of them for on the postcards. I shot them again through the banisters but with all lights off, no flash and shining a torch on her face...And some from above, on the staircase...

After taking these I decided to take a few of my boyfriend dressed up in mac and hat, I thought they would look good on the postcards...
